American Art Collector

Artspace111 artists Daniel Blagg and John Hartley are featured for their exhibit Fun and Games at the Kidder Smith Gallery in Boston, MA. The exhibit will run from December 3, 2008 - January 17, 2009. The last (full page) image features our events coordinator Taylor McDaniel as Blagg's model!

Excerpt from magazine on Daniel Blagg: Blagg calls himself a "visual hunter," drawing inspiration from his neighborhood and using familiar imagery to convert gritty abandoned urban landscapes into still life paintings that are decidedly blue collar. Blagg experiments with phenomenology in his new piece titled Bus Stop. The artist uses colors, shapes and objects to lure viewers to the scene of a pretty girl waiting for a bus as an electric character looks on. "an abstract idea of attraction inspired this piece," Blagg says. "It creates unintended interpretation between the two that's happenstance."

Excerpt from magazine on John Hartley: Most of John Hartley's composition are inspired by childhood memories. For the past nine years he has been painting a series of plastic Army men. "The paintings could have different meanings to lots of people. The obvious meaning to me was about play and childhood memories and imitating Hollywood," says Hartley. "The second meaning is they're serious. Nine years ago we weren't in war but they're timely in that there's a war going on somewhere in the world. There's a social element there."
